@Joe Great photo, when was it taken? The Arkana (The Flight Works) factory looks like its either under construction (unlikely as the windows or in) or had been damaged by fire?

Apologies for delay! I was very young when these pictures were taken, I do recall the fields or the Meadow as my Dad called them, our house in Lansdown View was called Tormead (over the Meadow).

I do have a short bit of cine film of the old farm house on the site in a derelict state taken from Shophouse Road where my Uncle lived in the early 60’s but I can’t recall it, so I guess the area was a farm.

Can I ask who you knew in no.59? I recall Mrs & Mrs Luton living there, she died circa 1981 and the house changed hands then. The Luton’s were Carpenters in the Twerton area.

It’s interesting to note that there is a “Pennycomequick” in Plymouth, and another on the North Cornwall coast. There are similar competing explanations about the origin of the Plymouth name: one being that it comes from the British/Celtic for “creek at the head of the valley”, and another relating to a former pub called “The Penny”. It seems most likely to be a Celtic survival.
