At some point during the last century, the Carrs, a local wealthy family, donated a plot of land on the corner of Newton Road and Cleeve Green to the local authority for the express purpose of it being used for people with disabilities. The new building on this site is called Bath Community Resource Centre. On the Newton Road side you have the Carrswood Day Services building and behind this is Cleeve Court, a residential home for elderly people. Also, Cleeve Court has it's own day centre called Hazelmeir for people with Alzheimers. Carrswood Day Services Carrswood service users/clients are referred from social services and follow person-centred plans to help them with personal care, self-esteem, and towards becoming more independent. The ethos behind Carrswood is helping people to move forward - progression. It is useful to think of Carrswood as having two parts - a) the building and b) the day services. Carrswood Day Services employs between 20 and 30 staff and use the new building as a support base. However, they use a range of other buildings in the community such as Rose Cottage, Odd Down youth club, the Salvation Army and Kingswood Sports Centre. Of the 90 people that use Carrswood Day Service every day, about 50% spend time away from the centre in the community. Carrswood Day CentreWhen you walk into the building you are at once impressed with the sense of light, openness and space. The new building is a fantastic resource with a long internal 'street' wide enough for three people who use wheelchairs to pass. This is flanked by versatile rooms (some of which have hoist coverage), an open-plan dining area, kitchens, activity rooms, kitchen, a sensory room and office space. The clients either use local authority transport or make their own way to the day centre. The people who attend the day service have a choice of packed lunch, can make use of the dining facilities or use local shops. Clients that use the services may have a range of disabilities, including profound and/or multiple disabilities. The programmes are varied and may involve cooking, art and craft, music, speech and language therapy, communication, and personal hygiene.Other ServicesAs well as the centre, Bath & North East Somerset Council places clients with families though the Adult Family Link Service, offers help to clients living in the community through the Supported Living Service, support clients with employment activities in the community through the Community Day Service Team and gives clients work experience through projects such as Rake Up and Grow - a community gardening service. Carrswood, with its good accessibility and excellent opportunities, offers an impressive service to people with disabiltiies in our community.
