Genesis are opening a charity shop in Twerton High Street this month and their Furniture Project is based in Oldfield Park. But what exactly is Genesis? I met up with Sarah Thorn and Paul Solly to find out...

What is Genesis?

Genesis was started by a lady from Twerton. She saw homeless people going through bins in the town centre and the next day, with a friend, went back and took food. This developed into a soup run and Genesis was born. To this day, Genesis is a Christian charity that:

seeks to support and help the most needy in our community.

What do Genesis do?

Although Genesis emplpy 10 people and run their own projects, a big part of what Genesis do is supporting and equipping churches across Bath to meet the needs of the needy in their communities. Under the umbrella of Genesis are several projects:

1) Three food-based projects:

The Sunday Centre at Nexus Methodist Church: This is open every Sunday between 1pm and 5pm providing low cost meals and a warm and friendly environment.

Soup Run: This is organised by church teams and is run 7-days a week from the Old Cattle Market, off Walcot Street. They provide coffee, soup and sandwiches every night.

Lunch Box: This is run on Mondays and Wednesdays at St. Michael's Church next to Waitrose.

2) The Lifeline Centre

This is an afternoon drop-in at Bath Community Church. They provide courses, events and practical, emotional and spiritual support.

3) The Furniture Project

This provides low cost furniture for students and those on benefit.

The Furniture Project

The Furniture Project is great resource for people on low incomes in Bath, and it's right on our doorstep. They provide sofas, washing machines, tables, chairs, lamps, you name it!

Between 2006 and 2007, The Furniture Project delivered 2324 items and 907 food parcels. Now that's something! They are open between 10am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Check them out at 31A West Avenue, Oldfield Park. Tel: 01225 421111

4) Woodworks

Work placements, training and beautifully restored furniture for sale at Woodworks.

5) Street Outreach Team

This is a group of people who seek to tell people about Jesus on the streets of Bath. They also take church services in residential homes.

Who funds Genesis?

Genesis is supported by sixty different churches across Bath. If you would like to find out more, why not visit the Genesis Web site: http://www.genesistrust.org.uk/
